Shorelines of Hope is a Rhode Island based nonprofit whose mission is creating inclusive overnight camp experiences.

The Vision: Shore Adventure Centers

At Shore Adventure Centers, we envision a camp where every child, veteran, elder, and individual—regardless of ability, identity, or background—can find belonging, joy, and purpose.

We are building more than a camp. We are building a safe harbor where nature heals, where compassion leads, and where unforgettable memories spark lifelong growth.

Through inclusion, enrichment, and respect, we aim to create a place where every guest feels seen, supported, and celebrated—365 days a year.

FOUNDER'S STORY

Melissa Cullen, Founder

Melissa Cullen, Founder and President

I grew up understanding what it meant to go without food, without encouragement, without a sense of future or hope. But I also know the power of being given a chance.

As a child, I had the life-changing opportunity to attend Morgan Memorial Fresh Air Camps. What began as a nervous, uncertain experience for a 7-year-old soon became a transformative journey. Camp was more than just fun—it was educational, social, and deeply empowering. I gained life skills I wouldn’t have learned elsewhere. By age 15, I became a Counselor-in-Training, eventually working my way up to Program Director. Summer after summer, I returned—not just because I loved camping, but because it had reshaped my life.

That experience became the inspiration behind Shore Adventure Centers.

For decades, I’ve dedicated my life to working with children and underserved communities—from owning daycare centers in Warwick, RI to mentoring high school students with special needs. I’ve also volunteered with women’s groups, supported elderly individuals, and continuously advocated for spaces where everyone feels safe, included, and inspired.

I couldn’t be more proud or excited for Melissa as she begins this incredible journey of opening a camp designed for kids, the LGBTQ+ community, veterans, and individuals with disabilities. Knowing Melissa, there is truly no one more qualified, compassionate, or driven to bring such a meaningful vision to life.

Melissa is one of the most selfless and generous people I’ve ever met. Her heart is as expansive as her vision, and she consistently goes above and beyond to help others—never looking for recognition, only impact. Her passion for making a difference shines through in everything she does, and this camp is a beautiful reflection of her lifelong dedication to inclusivity, healing, and joy.

She puts her heart and soul into everything—not because she has to, but because it’s simply who she is. This camp isn’t just a project for Melissa; it’s her purpose. And I have no doubt it will become a place filled with safety, laughter, connection, and empowerment—because she’s the one leading it.

I truly can’t wait to see this dream take shape. The world needs more people like Melissa, and the individuals this camp will serve couldn’t be in better hands.

Melissa Cullen is one of the most compassionate, open-hearted people I’ve ever known. As a gay man, I’ve often felt unseen—but Melissa always made me feel valued and deeply loved. In one of the darkest times of my life, she showed up with quiet, unwavering kindness and helped me find my way back to myself.

That’s why I believe so strongly in her vision to build a camp for LGBTQ youth. It’s not just an idea, it’s who she is. Melissa doesn’t just speak about acceptance; she lives it, creating space for others to be their true selves with grace, humility, and strength.

This camp will change lives—just like she changed mine.

I think your vision for Shore Adventure Center is incredible by combining your passion for helping others with a space where everyone feels included and safe. A camp that welcomes all, regardless of background, orientation, or ability is priceless and needed.

You’re the perfect person to lead it. In the decades I’ve known you, I’ve seen you help countless people—always quietly, never for recognition. That’s how I know this is truly your calling.

I fully support this camp and can’t wait to see your vision come to life.

Michelle Craig, Credentialing Coordinator III

I support the Shore Adventure Center and its mission to provide an inclusive space for everyone in RI. I was inspired by founder’s vision of a facility where people—regardless of race, color, sexual orientation, or disability—can participate in fun, accessible activities. This center will be a place that is equipped to accommodate all. There is a great need for a center like this.
